I went to work at Best Buy yesterday for a full day. WHEW! It was hectic and I loved it. I was able to work with a number of computers and install crap. Pretty standard stuff-- CD-ROMS, install programs, etc. But I've got to tell this story about this Indian family that came..
*NOTE: This is a long, slightly rambling story.
This guy comes in, slightly older, and I could see his wife and baby daughter waiting behind. This, being my first *actual* face-to-face contact with a customer, was more than eager to help, and I thought it might be easier that they were Indian. He began to tell me his problem.
On BestBuy.com, the description for the computer claimed that it had integrated Bluetooth, whereas the computer that he had clearly does not. I checked on the computer, and having a Bluetooth adapter myself at my house, I told him what he'd need.
"Well, you'll need to get a USB hub, and then a Bluetooth adapter that can fit into that hub."
"But," he began with a pronounced lisp, "that will divide the power between the different USB-connected devices and I can't have that."
He was right. But I had to pull out some slight bullshi* that I knew to get to this customer.
"True, but USB is a technology that allows about 28 devices to be connected together with no significant power drainage. "
I definitely knew that there were double digits involved in the devices but I can't tell ya if it's 20 or 50. To me it was all irrelevant. This dude had 4 devices to connect. He looked perplexed as I talked to him. Not so much that he didn't understand, but instead that he was almost looking for some error that he could point out. He didn't enjoy this.
"So that's what I need to do, right? Just get the hub and the adapter.."
"Yup, that's it."
And this is where he started pulling out his INDIAN skills.
"Since the website said that this computer was supposed to have it, I shouldn't have to pay for that stuff, you should give it to me for free."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This dude had bought a computer and decided, after 3 MONTHS, to bring it back and had the audacity to ask for free stuff? We have a 14 day exchange/return policy and he would have definitely had time to figure it out and bring it. But for something that was bought in OCTOBER?
Needless to say, I informed him of that in the nicest way possible. His wife - clearly the one that wears the pants in the family - then got involved with a convoluted story about her having a 3 year policy if the computer was broken. But, I explained, the computer isn't broken- you just didn't bring it back for a clear misprint. Anyway, they demanded the manager who then told them the same thing that we at the Tech desk did. They left, crushed that their negotiation skills didn't work.
Next time maybe they should've asked me. I would've done the same-- except not wait for 3 months.

Uh-oh! Didn't write yesterday. Ehh. Big deal.
I went to work yesterday at Best Buy for the first time. I really enjoy the idea of working with the company; there are a lot of opportunities that I would like to explore. However, there's one thing there that was really weird for me: at SIN, you go there with a task. After finishing the task you go home. Why waste the company's money, right? With this, we were done with the training and still had an hour or two left. So we just... mulled around. Very strange. I mean I suppose that's what happens when you are contracted for a set number of hours, but... ah well. I'll be getting used to it as time progresses, I suppose. Besides, yesterday was just training- soon will come actually working there, when you have no idea when the customers are coming in. We'll see.
I'm out.

YAY Insomnia! I couldn't get to sleep this morning until 5:50. Woke up at 8:54. And, as of now, I'm not sleepy. Just realllllllllllllly tired. (Duh.) $5 says I have about 4 hours before I completely shut down and fall asleep standing up. ;)

Wonderful dream last night. Thought that Beyonce was madly in love with me. Hey, these are the little things that keep a college guy goin, alright? And besides, think of how bad it could have gone. Illustration:

Merrrrrry Christmas.
Went to my parents' house this morning to open up Christmas gifts. ECSTATIC, because I got the Pirates of the Caribbean DVD.
However, I'll be honest, my gift to Vinni was DEFINITELY the best. I got her a DVD player (because apparently we're the only people, "in the world," as she put it, who don't own one) and her beloved X-Men 2 DVD.
I made a scavenger hunt card where she had to go to the garage and find her gift. I put it in an old suitcase, and you can check out the video here. Her reactions are priceless.

Had a VERRRRRRRRRY good day. Got my spiffy new glasses. (Always a good thing.) Had Mexican food for lunch, and Indian for dinner. Not too bad. Most importantly, I was able to hang out with Vinni and do big brother/little sister quality time. In short- we hung up Christmas lights at home. Pics can be found at: Mi Familia in My Pictures.

Wow. Just watched the E! True Hollywood Story about Bill Clinton. Damn the guy went through some crap. Regardless of his 'discretions' that he definitely committed, here's what I feel:
1) He balanced the budget after three Presidencies of deficit. Seems like Republicans seem to have this as a habitual problem.. hmm..
1a) The country went through the most prosperous economic period in US history when he was in office.
2) Brought a sweeping gun bill (Brady Bill) to fruition.
3) Is the only white guy that can have an office in Harlem and completely fit in as a member of the community.
Of course, there're probably a million other reasons- these are just the few I can think of off-hand.
Plus, here's my ultimate reason for liking him: he was named the Number 1 Schmoozer by The Official Guide to Schmoozing. (John F Kennedy was #5 and Franklin D Roosevelt was number 2. Not a bad list considering the first one is still considered royalty in the US and the second brought the US out of The Depression.) Yep, other than the harassment issues, I'd love to have the charisma he has. Wow.

Today was pretty good, actually. Spent about 3 hours messing around with my camera by taking a lot of pictures of Nitu. Ya know. it's no wonder people keep thinking we're married; we hang out so friggin' much. A couple of the pics can be found by going to the 'Friends' directory at the My Pictures page.
I also went ahead and put a bunch into a zip file: Nitu's Photo Shoot.. by Vinoj.
Should be back later..

HAHAHA!!
I'm definitely gonna have a blast with this one anytime a Bush supporter starts talkin about WMDs
"Ah screw it. I can't find it. I give up."

Well the page seems to working perfectly.. except in Opera, my true love over Internet Explorer for browsers. That, of course, means I coded something wrong somewhere. However ya know what? I don't care. I'm happy it works with IE because about 80% of the browsers in the world use it. So I'll be just fine, thanks.
It's a brand new day, a brand new um.. something and I feel good. Now to come up with something to do for today.. I know! Tweak around with my camera! Take photos of random.. NOTHING and pull it into photoshop.
So check this - I find out yesterday that one of my friends on hotornot is actually an old friend of mine from a whooooole while back. I used to teach at her school when she was in 8th grade, I think. Wow. Kids growing up so fast these days... *sniffle sniffle
AH DAMMIT. I just checked it in Netscape and the page doesn't work either. So ya know what? Screw it! This page is for Internet Explorer only! :)

I'm back from the test(s) and exhausted. I now, officially, have no excuse but to work on this paper. I COULD spend some time tinkering with the camera, but I'm not quite in the mood right now. The only thing I can think of as a time waste at this point would be this actual blogger. Rest assured that I'll be on here quite a bit today bitching and moaning. Wonderful especially because no one else reads this anyway.

Alright, so it's now pretty late and we (my friend Prashanthi and I) have gotten HALFWAY on studying for Management class. (Our final is on Thursday.) Weirdly we have troubles studying in general because we talk too damn much but today seems to be okay. We spent the last two hours without any conversation- just note making and such.
Very proud of us.
Another thing - I'm trying to learn how to do blogging (is that a verb?) on my own with my own site instead of having to do it here and with advertisng. I WILL have to say however that I like the whole kalelvz.blogspot.com thing. Spiffier than having to do a long URL that I'll get from Cox cable company.
K, now back to work.

It's Tuesday, I have a 20 page paper due on Friday, and I've done about 3 paragraphs. Talk about not being motivated to do it yet. C'mon. It's about Classic Greek Art. All those in favor of starting on this raise your hands.
Thanks.
Until I get the urge (rrright) I continue scrounging through the web looking for different interesting sites where i can waste my time. I came upon blogger.com and decided hell, no one's gonna read this anyway, so why not just start a log/diary while I'm at it? Now the question is this-
"How long will I continue this diary? Is it a temporary fad?"
We'll see.
I'm hungry. I think I'll eat. That's usually the order in which that works so I'll go do that now.
Thanks.
